Eep! Have you ever had this problem?

I was doing some straight line quilting with my walking foot, and realized I was getting some "crud" on my work every so often.

I hope you appreciate my very technical jargon . . . crud is the word I used because I don't know exactly what this is:

Is it metal shavings from inside the walking foot? Is it solidified oil and dust from it? Or has a quilting gremlin left a little of his late night snack in there, and it's plopping out little by little?

Please help me out here -- I can't have these black marks all over my beautiful projects!!

Love,

  1. When is the last time (or first) you took your walking foot apart and cleaned and re-oiled it? Like any working part - it collects all that lovely lint and dust and bits.

  2. I would say a good cleaning wouldn't hurt! I would get one of those tiny hose attachments for the vacuum and try to nab all those little particles before they do some damage. If its a little gremlin, catch him and post a pic of him for your Pets on Quilts show! LoL So glad I stumbled onto your blog...looks like a fun place!

  6. I would be afraid to take my walking foot apart. I would have it serviced. It would be cheaper than buying a new one, if you get my meaning. Are you sure it's from the foot? Does your machine need cleaning?

  7. I think it needs cleaned, too. I clean and oil mine every so often, but I don't take it apart to do it. I vacuum and use a q-tip and clean it out as best as I can.

  9. I have never had that problem...perhaps a good thorough cleaning of the foot is in order?

  10. Wow! I am very good about cleaning my machine, but I never thought about my walking foot. Makes perfect sense, though. I am going to go check mine out right now.

  11. Interesting. I've never seen anything like this and would be curious to learn what the root cause is.

Do you get any bizarre scatter when doing FMQ? If not, if you only get this when stitching with your walking foot I'm inclined to think it is your walking foot. I know I've had to change out the souls (rubber) on my walking foot and have also had to replace my walking foot. So, I want to know how old is your walking foot? But, I agree with others in that this is a good example where it is good to take your walking foot to your dealer to see what they can do. Might be the rubbers on the walking foot feet, which is simple and inexpensive to replace.

  13. It is from the walking foot! I just dismantled mine and cleaned inside parts with alcohol (don't know if it's right or not, but it got off all the residue) and qtips. Seems to be from rubbing on the black plastic inside or a mixture of that and a bit of oil.

Was able to get the specks (and I had a ton) on a white tshirt I made using a special laundry cleaner for lubricants.

I was not afraid to take the foot apart. Took pictures as I dismantled it. However, one part came out, but I could not see where it fit. Trouble finding anything online, but I'll get it :) Not too complicated.
