ReplyDeleteMy mom and grandma were the worst cooks in the universe -- my sister and I have improved their recipes and still provide our families with dishes we can claim are traditional to our family. So the one secret my female relatives held back from us is how they could have made everything taste SO BAD, lol!

ReplyDeletemy mom never cooked growing up, and I don't remember my grandmother's cooking, BUT since I'm from DK, there ARE certain things I miss or can't make. Like danish rice pudding- not like kozy shack! it has obviousbly the rice pudding, also chopped almonds and one WHOLE almond (skin off of course) at Christmas, the person who gets the WHOLE almond, gets a "almond" present, which is usually chocolate or a game for kids. When I was little the adults would then hide the almond or give it to one of the kids so they'd get the present, or they'd trick us and say they got it in their cheek.

ReplyDeleteDuplicating the stuffing my mom made is a real challenge. She saved crusts and leftover cornbread all year long, some ended up in bread pudding and some in stuffing. Recipe?! nope, just some of this and some of that. It always tasted awesome!! Mine is good, of course, but just not the same. (I've never been able to duplicate her potato salad either!)

ReplyDeleteMy mom made the best cinnamon rolls, but she passed away before I realized I should have asked her for the recipe,, and I've never been able to duplicate her rolls. I was in my twenties and busy w/little ones, and later realized how much I missed. Great giveaway.

ReplyDeleteMy Mom made a yummy cherry nut pound cake, but the thing about it is that sometimes the recipe works perfectly, sometimes it just doesn't, and the funny thing is that it happened to my Mom every once in a while....haven't figured out the problem, but it's really really good when it bakes up nice and high and not so good when it's pretty flat and doughy. ReplyDeleteFor years my mom made Sausage Stars for our family gatherings. She kept the recipe secret and none of us could replicate it. Just before she died, she gave me the recipe. I am now the official Maker of the Stars. :)

ReplyDeleteCorn bread dressing! Mine never tastes quite the same...I think the secret is the amount of broth used. There is no written recipe, just a bit of this and a lot of broth! Mmm good!

ReplyDeleteMy Mother made this double chocolate fudge -- one layer fudge and on layer butterscotch. It was very very delicious. She gave me the recipe with her tips written on the side and as much as I tried, I could never get the recipe to work. I am assuming that just don't have the skills like she did. You have to work fast and I'm mighty slow! Ha!

My Grandma made the best light bread. I have never been able to duplicate it. I can come really close but never exact. I know she gave me the correct recipe as I wrote it down while watching her so I think the missing ingredient is her love. I think knowing that she made it just made it taste better.

My Mom made the best pies, and the secret was in her flaky crust! All during my kids' childhoods, we never had pie at home, but waited till we got to their grandmother 's (Sweetie's) house! One of my daughters took up the gauntlet after Sweetie passed away, but then -- she moved to Sweden, and with her went all of the dreams of delicious pies. Am I too old to learn how? Sigh...

ReplyDeleteI never knew my grandmothers, they passed away when I was young and lived in a different state than me. I think I cooked and baked nearly everything my mom made.
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit sad but we don't have any special Christmas recipes passed down from my Grandmother and mother! Neither of them did a great deal of special baking. I've started a new tradition of making almond bread. Perhaps on day, my daughter's in law (I have 3 sons) will ask for my special recipe!

ReplyDeletei even did the brandy and rum thing that she used to do with it. but just can't replicate the taste as i remember it. i've kept copies of the recipe for more than forty years and will keep on trying. mom passed more than forty years ago; i never thought to ask her her secret for tasty fruitcake.
I am pretty sure my Mama left something out of her Peanut Butter Candy Roll recipe! I have NEVER been able to make it like hers! She passed away nearly 40 years ago, before I turned 18, so I never got her recipe. Same thing for her chocolate pie and buttercream icing recipes!!

ReplyDeleteOhhh I love that fabric. I haven't seen it before, thanks for the giveaway. I have tried and tried to make a Jam Cake and can never get it to turn out. Have you ever had one? It is so good and has a brown glazed cunchy frosting with pecans. My mouth is watering thinking about it but alas in the last 35 years I have never got it to turn out.

ReplyDeleteI have my grandmother's recipe book that she put together in a notebook and I one time tried to make her recipe for what she called Swiss cakes. They weren't bad but not quite like hers and even though there is nothing that she left out of the recipe she never did show her grandkids exactly how to make them. Every year I say I am going to try to make them once more but they take all day to make and Christmas is such a busy time I just never seem to get to it. Maybe I will have to make them at a different time of year.

ReplyDeleteMy mom made what she laughingly called her rotten cake. It had to chill for a couple of days before the flavors blended just right into a moist heavenly treat. I could never match it.
ReplyDeleteHi! I wanted to let you know I got the box Friday afternoon. I was distracted yesterday taking care of my 15yo with a nasty stomach/intestine malady, so I didn't get them out to drool over until last night. This is fun fabric! Definitely going to make something for my kitchen with it. Not sure yet what that will be... Thanks again. :D
