Borders and finishing - Maggie's First Dance (Giveaway closed now!)

Have you been sewing along with us on the free Block of the Month from Jacquelynne Steves?

We've had a blast with this project!

This month, it's time for borders and finishing . . .  I changed things up a bit from the suggested borders, because I had a certain spot on my wall where I wanted this to be displayed.

Here are my blocks assembled into rows:

Aren't they cute?

Now here is my take on the borders:

I used a white border half the width of the suggested one, and then went ahead with the floral print right next to that.
I love, love how the borders sparkle! The floral is such a cute print, and really pulls all those colors together!

I'm not sure how this next picture happened . . . looks like someone's toes are in the photo. Who is that photo bombing?

I'm going to "sandwich" and quilt this as soon as possible!
Any way, I hope that you are all excited for this month's instructions to slide into your inboxes, and that you will hop around to all of the other bloggers that are participating. Check these out:

As always, we have a fun giveaway for you to enter! This one is sponsored by Kari at New Leaf Stitches!
I hope you will hope over to her shop and look around -- she has some awesome, helpful products there for us quilters!

This one is called the Clearly Perfect Angles Pack . . .

Here is a video so that you can see this cool product in action!

Would you like to win this? Tell me in a comment: do you always sew a perfect quarter inch seam? Do you sometimes hit the magic "quarter inch"? Or do you just sew, pedal to the metal and not worry if you are accurate? (Gasp!) For sure, that makes matching things up just a tad difficult! (Grin)

Be sure to enter the giveaways at the other bloggers' sites, too, OK?
We'll leave this one open until the 14th, to give everyone time to enter.

Good luck! Oh! PLEASE make sure that you leave your email address as part of your comment, OK? I have SO many no-reply folks, and I want you to have a chance to win! You can do it like this: quilterjane(at)jane(dot)com

  1. Sometimes my seams are perfect, sometimes they aren't... sometimes I take them out and re-sew and other times I think... close enough! I claim that it's because I'm a fairly new quilter, but I'm not sure how different I will be in a year.

  2. I don't consistently get perfect seams the first time. But if I'm making something where accuracy matters, I sew them again to straighten them out.

  3. Like Angela.....I do my best to get thT 1/4 inch accurate, but doesn't always happen the first time around.

  4. I aim for that perfect 1/4 but sometimes it is off a bit. I would love to win this. geneblack [@] gmail {dot} com

  5. The 1/4" seam is not my greatest achievement-and it does make a difference. However, I just bought a 1/4" foot, so practice, practice!

  6. Such a cute quilt design! I love your colors and prints. The borders and blocks don't fight for attention. They nicely compliment the other. It's a beauty Jacque!

  7. Love the way your quilt looks! I usually have accurate 1/4 inch seams.

  9. Your quilt turned out great. I try my best to hit the 1/4" but even with a good 1/4" foot it can be a little off.

  10. Beautiful quilt. So cheerful and comforting. Lovely design and fabrics. Great job.

I've been quilting for ages and began very much pedal to the metal, not caring about accuracy. Thus, I developed some bad habits. Now I piece much slower and I'm focused on accuracy, always looking for ways to improve my precision piecing skills and actually look for challenging projects and tools to help me do such.

  11. Still trying to find the quarter inch, this sounds wonderful. 24Tangent@gmail.com

  12. I have to sew a perfect 1/4". So I take the time to do tests each and every time before I start a project, even though I am fairly certain I'm good, but I dont chance it. I check it later on if I took a long break or switched projects or needles. I don't rush through my projects though, so I don't mind. I want to enjoy the process and the finished product. I am waaay to OCD. I am completely aware of it, but I am happy with my process and enjoy every minute of it. kwarren29@cox.net

  13. I try to sew a scant 1/4 inch seam every time.

  14. Sweet quilt top!
I wish I could say that I sew an accurate 1/4" seam allowance, but I don't. I do try hard for consistency!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I try to do accurate 1/4" Sometimes, when sewing tiny pieces, I have noticed I stray smaller.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I strive for accuracy and consistancy, but I don't use too many patterns, so for me, consistancy is more important.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I try to do a perfect 1/4 inch seam and sometimes I do a scant.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Most the time my seams are 1/4" but sometimes they get off a little. Depends on where at and what I'm doing as to whether I redo them or not.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm trying to sew a perfect 1/4" but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm trying a new foot hope that helps.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I try to sew my perfect seam but do have to in-sew a few of them that get a little off.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Most days I get an accurate 1/4 inch seam, but then there are those OTHER days! Haha.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I really try to sew an accurate 1/4" seam. Most of the time I succeed, but there are always little slip-ups along the way.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have all the patterns ready to start. I've been getting ready for our church Craft Fair which was this past weekend. Now I can start catching up on other things.

  24. I sew a scant quarter inch most every time, otherwise it's time to break out the seam ripper! Ugh. Mary

  25. I try very hard to sew a perfect scant quarter seam and with lots of practice I am getting better and better. It is so good to see improvement !!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sewing a 1/4" seam is always a challenge. I try to be accurate but sometimes it is devilish.

  27. YUP - I always sew a perfect 1/4 inch seam thanks to my the amazing pressure foot I purchased to go with my sewing machine (won't give free advertising here so won't mention the brand name of my machine). I also own several "Seams So Easy" seam guides by Lori Holt which helps my sewing students achieve a perfect 1/4 inch seam too. An amazing world we live in, don't you think? Soooooo much technology!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have a 1/4" foot that I use, so as long as I'm consistent, things match up fairly well. But I haven't spent much time measuring to see if it's really 1/4"! I haven't tried the clearly perfect angles, and would love to! Thanks for the chance! Sliceofpilife (at) gmail (dot) com

    ReplyDelete
  29. No, I haven't achieved being able to sew a consistent 1/4" seam. I would love to win this tool to see if I can with it.

  30. Hey, I try to sew a perfect quarter inch seam, I really do. Your quilt top is lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ummm--I honestly try to sew a perfect 1/4 inch seam, but sometimes I tend to wobble a little and get off track, so then I have a do-over.Thank you for the chance to win. Your quilt is lovely. I like the border change.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I do try my best to aim for that golden quarter inch mark! I know the stitching goes wonky from time to time, but we don't talk about that! Your quilt is gorgeous with the surrounding yellow blocks and floral border!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have a 1/4 inch foot, but occasionally it goes a tad inside, and then the seam is a little too wide. The next foot upgrade is the 1/4 inch with a guide on the right hand side. The Bernina 57D might be on my list for Father Xmas.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Your floral border, what a fantastic fabric, finding all the colours in the blocks, and linking them up on the outside. Lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I always try to get a perfect 1/4" seam, but I'm a newbie quilter, so I don't always hit my mark. I do a lot of ripping! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Beautiful job and love the border! I always use my 1/4" foot to get an accurate seam - mostly ;)

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1/4" seam? I try to get it as close as I can but sometimes have to stretch the fabric to get the seams to nest. Usually works out fine and no one would know I'm not perfect! (That's really not new news LOL!)

  38. I cannot say that I achieve perfect 1/4in seams but I try with the help of my new Janome machine. It has a function where you can select the 1/4in seam button, it moves the foot across to the correct position. You just have to remember to switch it back.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have the 1/4" foot. Can't say it is accurate, but it's close! ndfromsd(at)gmail(dot)com

  40. As I am new to sewing & quilting, it is hit or miss with sewing a 1/4". I am getting better though. I just got a Husqvarna Viking Opal 690Q and hope the 1/4" presser foot with guide will help me get better at it. rellimo1991@gmail.com

  41. Yes Please I would love to win this. The clearing perfect angles would be great to use on any of my sewing machines, it was so nice to be able to get that exact 1/4 inch seam . Just wanted you to know that I love the yellow in the quilt.

  42. Very lovely quilt...I am always amazed at how hard it is to find that sweet spot on the 1/4 inch I work hard to maintain it, find it and keep it

    ReplyDelete
  43. I do pretty good with the 1/4 inch seam, I go slow and concentrate. Beautiful quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I do try hard to keep 1/4" close as possible...slow & steady does keep it close! :)

Thank you for chance to win this very cool "helper"! :D

  46. I am a novice at this! I have trouble with the seam allowance thus trouble matching seams up. I trim, trim, trim...One day it will become 2nd nature to me!

  47. I have not started the Maggie's BOM yet, because I have been working on another quilt BOM and a crochet BOM. I have enjoyed seeing the work that has been posted on your blog and am looking forwards to starting my quilt in a few months.

  50. I DO NOT always have a perfect 1/4". I think I'm pretty consistent but depending on the machine I use (I have several) the seam is not always 1/4". If they aren't consistent I usually re-do the 'offs' but sometimes I fudge other places to get them to fit.

  51. I try very hard to get 1/4" seams and if they are not really close, then I rip seams and do over. This saves me headaches later on in the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Have trouble being accurate, need much more practice.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I used to be the queen of the famous variable 1/4" seam allowance but am much better now. But this would make me better. Have printed out the BOM patterns and will sew this winter.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well, of course I ALWAYS have a perfect 1/4" seam (she said with a laugh)! I really do try and have gotten much better than I was last year. Thanks for a great giveaway! BTW, I like your quilt very much.

  55. Jacquelyn sent me on a treasure hunt! ggg What a lovely version of Maggie's First Dance. Your thread painting has me intrigued.... While my eye has gotten pretty good about gauging 1/4" seams, I've had to do too much un-sewing to trust my eyes alone! I place my trust in my quarter-inch foot! Tools are made to be used!! (smile) Then those perfect points appear & you feel so fantastic! Woo-hoo!

  58. OMG I need this, I honestly couldn't sew a 1/4 inch to save myself sometimes and when it happens (by accident) I seriously do a happy dance. My kids think I'm nuts haha

    ReplyDelete
  59. It has taken me many years and a very good teacher to eventually get my seams mostly at 1/4". Did I say mostly? well I have been know to get out my little unpicker and start again, and again, oops, and again! Anything to help me achieve perfection would be a winner with me.

  60. I am a "scant" 1/4 incher! Then I can give my squares a little trim before assembling.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I usually snap on my quarter in foot, but when I get lazy, I sew without it. ....not too bad, fairly straight and even. emmareid (at) gmail (dot) com Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  62. My 1/4 inch is not as accurate as I would like all the time. On an important quilt like the one I'm making for myself (A 1st ) I make big and trim down.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I really try to achieve a 1/4 inch seam throughout my quilt blocks. Usually within about 1/8 inch give or take overall in a 12 inch unfinished block.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Love your quilt, I try my very best to keep them 1/4 inch, but sometimes they get off.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Unfortunately, it's hit or miss for me. If I go real slow, I come fairly close to the magic quarter inch seem. colleeng73@gmail.com

  66. Let's just say I strive for perfect 1/4" seams and sometimes get lucky. I usually do a pretty good job, but then there are those days where nothing is fitting right. I just need to slow it down and pay attention like Sally Collins does. Thanks for the gie away and your quilt is sooo cute! jennifer.padden(at)austin(dot)utexas(dot)edu

  67. I try my absolute best to get that perfect 1/4". Sometimes you can fudge a bit. As I've grown more experienced, I pick out a lot more that are not than I used to. Julie.mirdoch@shaw.ca

  73. I have a quarter inch foot but that is not completely accurate so I mostly just use tape on the machine to line up my fabric. Sewing hst's I have to draw the lines so just purchased the little Ruler to draw the lines with its so cute.

  74. Thank you. I never usually post much, but thought I'd try to win something for a change. If your not in it you can't win. Haha
