Cozy Afternoon - Borders and a giveaway!
I put that picture there, because there still is time to jump in and complete this cute block of the month pattern. The blocks are so well explained in the pattern, and they work up fast! Here is the link to jump over there!
Today is the day for me to show you how my borders and setting triangles worked out. This was the most fun of all, so far, to see the rows coming together!
I was able to use this adorable tossed teacup fabric from Jacquelynne's "Peaceful Pastimes" fabric collection for the large squares; isn't it cute?
The sun was playing hide and seek with me on the day that I had time to photograph my quilt top, so some of these look different. I took this one to show you how that teacup print plays with the other fabrics - awesome!
I ran short of the navy polka dot that I was using for the narrow strips, so I pulled a remnant of dark blue from my stash. Here is one of the places that I alternated the strips; I really like a scrappy quilt, so I'm loving how these play together!
I alternated them so there would be some of that "new" navy on several spots, because the final edge on this quilt will be that same navy, used as the binding.
Isn't that center "star" pretty? I had a blast making those applique block centers!
The setting triangles are another of Jacquelynne Steves' wonderful fabrics - it's a pretty blue from the "Happy Town" line. (You might want to hop over and see if any of her fabrics would work for your own quilt top . . . here is the link: just click here.)
Really liking the polka dots and the tea cups!
When you receive the email today with the borders and triangles instructions, you will see that your floral is used one more time in that border.
Another shot of the middle of the top . . .
I played with Paint.net and fixed this so you can see how that blue binding will finish off the quilt!
One more shot of an applique block with the tossed teacup squares . . . putting all of these on point just makes it that much more interesting!
I neglected to take photos of the process, but I want to mention one thing: when you get the rows put together, you may "freak out" because the triangles and edges just don't look quite right. You might be telling yourself, "That triangle is just too little," or "those edges just don't look like I did it right!"
Never fear! Jacquelynne's instructions tell us to expect that, and then a step or two later, you'll be trimming the edges for the border, and you will breathe a sigh of relief! It will all work out just fine, you'll see!
This month we have a really sweet giveaway!
One lucky winner will receive the Hugs and Kisses quilt pattern, and also the pattern to make those adorable wool flower pins! Wouldn't they look great on your vest or blazer this fall? Or maybe make great gifts for your quilting and crafting friends!
Leave a comment here and tell me what you like best -- a one-piece backing, or a scrappy backing for your quilts? (Sometimes I like the backs of my quilts just as much as the fronts, when I piece them!)
Followers may leave another comment, for another chance to win! Please, please, either check your settings or leave your email as part of your comment . . . last time Mr. Random got a workout, since the first four or five chosen were no-reply! Something about Google plus is crazy, too, because I have trouble tracking y'all down! Leave your address this way: person(at)email(dot)com and then the bots won't find you, OK?
Please be sure to hop over to Jacquelynne Steves' blog too! Here is the linkie: click here!
Good luck in the drawing! And I hope you are working on your very own Cozy Afternoon quilt! Check out the other bloggers to see how they are doing, and you will have more chances to win those patterns!

Scrappy back is good. I use orphan blocks up that way.

A wonderful finish Jacque!!! I love seeing all the different versions of this BOM. Your applique has been fun to see each month :*)
ReplyDeleteОчень красивое одеяло! Мне нравится лоскутный бэк.
ReplyDeleteI use leftover fabric and blocks on my backs. I like to think that keeps my stash organized.
ReplyDeleteYou found the perfect fabric! And I love how you stretched that blue sashing fabric and added in the darker one...ingenious!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt has turned out lovely! I love all things scrappy - including quilt backs. Blogger might have a widget that allows people to put their email and URL in the comment section. Then you wouldn't have to worry about no replies.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very pretty quilt. Those blues are really easy on the eyes, and I love that teacup fabric. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI love scrappy quilts. The back of the quilt is a great way to use up more of those.
ReplyDeleteI like pieced backing so most of the time but there's something to be said for one piece of wide fabric when you're in a hurry!

Yes, I love to do a pieced back, usually with the "left overs" from the front.

Sometimes I love the backing fabric so much I have to keep it as one big piece, but I also like the scrappy look too.

Love your color choices for this BOM.

Jacquelynne's teacup fabric is perfect for your setting! Soo pretty:)
ReplyDeleteI do like pieced, artsy backings, but some quilts beg for one fabric, especially if there is a LOT of piecing and I am wanting to keep the bulk down!
I've enjoyed seeing your progress, your colors are lovely. And this BOM was perfect for bringing out each person's creative touch to produce a very unique and different color palette from the same pattern. Love the scrappy touch!
ReplyDeleteThe backing of the quilt depends on the front, to me. There are times and places for a plain backing .. and for a pieced backing. I have a picnic quilt that I expect to be on the grass and sat upon, used and abused. I put a green/black patterned one-piece backing on it (to hide the grass stains!). While, for my son's t-shirt quilt, because it was such a busy front, I wanted a bit of a busy back -- and I put his name and a few wonky stars down the center of the back just to give it a bit more flare and make it more personal.
ReplyDeleteThis has been sew much fun seeing all the different fabrics used by everyone! The backing well I have put all one piece on some, then I have made them with 2 or 3 different fabrics..just depended on the size and what fabric I had on hand!! jangunter@live.com just in case :)
ReplyDeleteI can't give you an either-or answer to which backing I like best. ALMOST always I prefer a pieced backing---I too think they add alot of interest to a quilt and are great for stash-busting as well. Don't you just LOVE Jacquelynne's patterns? I'm finishing up 3 versions of Cozy Afternoon.
ReplyDeletei use sheets, scrapy fabric , just about any kind of fabric for thr backing, i just make them for my big family....6 kids...23 grandkids...nearly 14 great grands
ReplyDeleteI usually have a solid backing but I should try scrappy - I do love the way it looks! thanks!
ReplyDeleteI usually prefer a one piece backing, except for when I do not! It really depends on the quilt and the mood of the front.
ReplyDeleteI like the colors in your quilt. Also glad to see someone else doing the binding in a different color. I'm pretty sure mine will be a different color since I don't think I have enough of my sashing fabric.
ReplyDeleteI prefer one piece backings. I'm relatively new to quilting so not sure how to go about quilting a pieced backing.

Your quilt is just lovely! Thanks for being part of my Block of the Month!
ReplyDeleteI like one piece backings the most.
ReplyDeletelove the blue dot frame you did on your quilt.
ReplyDeleteI prefer a one piece backing. I am kind of a stickler for uniformity.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, I'm loving the pieced together backs that serve as an additional interest to the quilt!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of pieced backings ... my favourite is Minky especially for smaller quilts! I go with smaller patterned or printed fabrics to complement the front although on occasions when people have asked for memory quilts I have included as much of the memory fabric as I can (which has meant adding pieces to the back if they can't be used elsewhere).
ReplyDeleteLove the applique and now trying to decide if I want to do mine in applique or embroidery or one of each. Aren't the possibilities wonderful.
ReplyDeleteLoving all the different ideas used in completing this pattern.
ReplyDeleteI guess for me, the backing choice really depends on the quilt, but I am partial to one piece. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt turned out really cute.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to start this quilt.
ReplyDeleteYour cozy afternoon quilt is adorable. The teacup blocks are so sweet and the teacups fabric is a perfect fit. I like your navy pieces mixed with the dots and scattered around that border.
